What the appointment is likeLink to this section

- The official journal entry — you sign it.
- Confirming which notarial act the document needs.
- You sign, in front of the notary.
- Certificate completed and stamped.

What to bringLink to this section
- Photo ID for every person signing — which IDs work
- Your document, filled in, not signed
- The last page with the notary wording, the one saying Acknowledgment or Jurat
No notary page on your document? Say so when booking and one can be brought along — but you need to find out which kind first. Ask whoever is requesting the document. A notary is not permitted to choose for you.
The four things that go wrongLink to this section
"My ID expired last month." Might be fine — California accepts an expired ID issued within the last five years. Check the issue date. The rule in full.
"There's a blank line I don't understand." Find out before the appointment. A document with blanks cannot be notarized, and a notary cannot tell you what to write.
"My wife is signing too, but she's at work." Both of you, in person, each with your own ID. Book a time that suits you both.
"Acknowledgment or jurat?" Ask whoever wants the document. Ten seconds for them, a saved appointment for you.
